The Great Game, a term coined by British intelligence officer Arthur Conolly in the early 19th century, refers to the intense rivalry and competition between the British Empire and the Russian Empire for influence and control in Central Asia during the 19th and early 20th centuries. This period of intense competition, which spanned over a century, was marked by a series of diplomatic maneuvers, military incursions, and strategic alliances that shaped the modern political landscape of the region. This article will examine the historical context of Anglo-Russian competition in Central Asia, the politics of the Great Game, and the implications of this rivalry on the region and the world at large.
