Abstract

This article investigates Vladimir Nabokov’s debut novel “Mary” (1926) with a focus on its central theme
of “lost paradise” written during his exile in Berlin, the novel captures the protagonist Lev Ganin’s nostalgic
recollections of his first love and idealized pre-Revolutionary Russia. The study analyzes how Nabokov employs
autobiographical elements, sensory details, and symbolic settings to depict exile, memory and irretrievable
happiness. Drawing connections to Milton’s “Paradise Lost”, the article underscores the artistic parallel between
divine creation and literary imagination. By exploring Nabokov’s narrative techniques and themes, the research
highlights contribution of “Mary” to his literary evolution and universal reflections on human longing.
