The proverbs of any nation represent a condensed expression of its centuries-old wisdom and life
experience. Through brief and figurative phrases, proverbs reflect the worldview, values, and social norms and
expectations of the people. In particular, somatic expressions related to body parts are frequently used in
proverbs—these include metaphorical phrases involving words such as shoulder, elbow, and wrist/forearm.
Somatic metaphors are based on the use of human physical experience to express abstract concepts; in other
words, the human body is employed as a simple and understandable source to convey complex spiritual or social
meanings. Through such physical imagery in proverbs, a nationʼs mentality and culture find their expression.
