This article analyzes the scientific activities of the Russian Geographical Society at the end of the 19th century, research directions and their scientific and practical significance. Expeditions organized at the initiative of the Society, ethnographic observations, cartographic developments and the collection of statistical data rapidly developed Russian geography. At the same time, these studies also served the political, economic and strategic interests of the empire. The results of the research became the basis for the formation of scientific schools and subsequent geographical discoveries.
