THE JÖN TURK MOVEMENT AND THE FORMATION OF REPUBLICAN IDEAS DURING THE SECOND MASHRUTIYA

The ideas of liberty, equality, and constitutionalism inherited from the French Revolution influenced not only Western societies but also non-Western ones, accelerating nationalist movements. In the Ottoman Empire, the dissemination and debate of these ideas became especially prominent during the Second Constitutional Era, a time marked by the growing threat of imperial collapse. This period served as a stage for seeking solutions to preserve the Empire. The main force behind the search for an answer to the question “How can this state be saved?” was the Young Turks, who opposed the policies of Sultan Abdulhamid II. Demanding a parliamentary system, equality, liberty, and freedom, the members of this movement developed a strong opposition to the Sultan and eventually achieved the restoration of the parliamentary system. This article examines the emergence and objectives of the Young Turk movement during the final years of the Ottoman Empire and analyzes the political and social developments that followed the declaration of the Second Constitutional Era, one of the movement’s most significant political achievements.
