This article analyzes the political structure, socio-economic life, administrative traditions, and role in international relations of the Central Asian khanates based on scientific and historical sources created by the Russian Empire in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The diaries of Russian military personnel, studies by orientalists, reports of the imperial administrative bodies, and statistical collections are evaluated from a source-based perspective. The article highlights the scientific significance of these sources, their possibilities and limitations in restoring historical truth.
