This article analyzes the main foreign policy directions of the Khiva Khanate under Muhammad Rahimkhan I and the nature of its relations with the Russian Empire in the first quarter of the 19th century. Based on a comprehensive analysis of Russian diplomatic reports, publications by expedition participants, materials from the Khiva chancery and contemporary foreign and local historiographic corpus, diplomatic missions, trade and economic contacts are examined, the issue of "Russians" captured by Russia (including cases of slavery) and the role of geopolitical and trade factors in shaping relations between the parties.
