The author of the article argues that at the end of the 19th century, archaeological excavations and scientific research began on Afrasiab, carried out by Russian orientalists and archaeologists, in particular, the origins of the addition of the methodology of archaeological research were revealed. On the example of the works of V.V. Krestovsky, mistakes, lack of experience and methods for conducting archaeological excavations are shown. V.V. Krestovsky conducted archaeological excavations in Afrasiab, but was not an archaeologist or historian, he was not a trained specialist in excavation work not only in Afrasiab, but throughout Central Asia, but at the same time he performed archaeological work.
