This article examines various aspects of the influence of books on personal development, broadening one’s horizons and the formation of cultural values. Particular attention is paid to the formation of moral and ethical standards, the development of cultural self-awareness and instilling in a person a sense of responsibility to society. Fiction is analyzed as an important historical source that can reflect the spirit of the times. Literary works not only tell about events of the past, but also convey the feelings, thoughts and worldviews of people who lived in different historical eras.
