COGNITIVE-SEMANTIC ANALYSIS OF MYTHOLOGEMES IN PHRASEOLOGICAL UNITS

This article analyzes the positive and complex functions of mythological components in phraseological units within the context of language and culture from cognitive-semantics and linguoculturological perspectives. The study employs corpus data, theoretical literature, and comparative analysis. Phraseological units containing mythological elements (e.g., “Pandora’s box”, “apple of discord”, “Icarian ambition”) activate in the addressee’s memory specific encyclopedic and intertextual knowledge structures, enabling them to convey rich meanings in a condensed form. At the same time, when translating such units into other languages, semantic losses, cultural context deficiencies, and difficulties in finding equivalents may arise. The article proposes a typology of mythological phraseological units, categorizing them into anthropomorphic, symbolic-metaphoric, and those denoting mythonyms and mythological beings; for each group, translation strategies are discussed. Practical recommendations include the expansion of phraseological corpora, the introduction of cultural-historical commentary in educational materials, and the provision of contextual notes for translators. The findings are significant for linguistic, translation, and pedagogical practices.
