The article discusses the formation, content, and purpose of the Manusmriti (Laws of Manu), as well as its role in the ancient Indian legal system. It explores the concepts of crime and punishment within the Manusmriti, including their characteristics, types, classifications, and significance. The importance of punishment in ensuring social stability, the manifestation of social inequality in the application of punitive measures, and the penalties applied for crimes committed by different social strata are also examined.
